The difficult part is not taking someone
off the street, but taking the street out of the person.
The time in a foster-home should be kept to an absolute
minimum to prevent over-dependency. Reintegration into
society is a priority. Our mums are taught how to care
for their kids, given health and nutritional instruction,
given the opportunity to return to school, learn a
profession, and have exposure to technology in our
computer school, and helped get a job.
The foster-home works with around
100 young mothers each year enabling approximately
56% of the girls to go back to their families or
go on to form a family with the father of their children.
Where there is no possibility of going back to their
extended family, we offer the option of low cost
housing for the mums to be able to work and have
somewhere stable to live. Normally in pairs, the
mums pay a token rent payment to live in a safe and
sanitary house. The practical, emotional and spiritual
help is continued as they start back in the “real world”.
Having successfully housed many
mums and children in differing rented houses we are
now planning to acquire and build low cost housing
as a permanent commitment to reintegration into society
of these young families. We are aiming to raise £50,000
to provide five low cost emergency houses for 8-12
young families needing to be removed from danger
at any one time.
